Easily one of the most recognizable forms of plastic surgery, breast implants have become a mainstream form of augmentation for many women around the world. For those who are considering breast implants, the questions still persist about the types of implants, the potential issues involving the surgery, and whether they are right for you.

What are Breast Implants?

They are devices that are implanted underneath the breast tissue or the muscles of the chest. The goal is to increase the size of the breasts and reshape them. For women who have undergone mastectomies, implants are designed to replace the breast tissue.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of implants for the following;

- Reconstruction after breast surgery or trauma

- Augmentation

- Correct defects in breast tissue

- Augment or improve results from a prior surgery

There are two basic types of breast implants, saline and silicone-gel. Both types are used inside a silicone shell that varies in size, shape, and texture to give the desired appearance. Although saline is considered safer inside the body compared to silicone, both are still considered safe especially when inside the protective shell.

Although breast implant surgery has been around for decades, there are still some risks involved with this type of procedure.

Risks of Breast implants?

One factor that should be noted is that breast implants are temporary. This is because the implants over time will suffer from issues that cannot be accurately predicted. What is true is that anyone who undergoes a breast implant will most likely have to experience additional surgeries to correct issues, put in new implants, or to remove the old implants.

In addition, some of the risks associated with breast implants include, but are not limited to the following;

- Infection

- Rupture of the shell

- Breast Implant Illness (BII)

- Potential cancer of the immune system

- Capsular contracture

- Pain in the breast

- Additional surgeries to correct issues

It should be noted that the silicone used both for the shell and the fluid inside is not the same as injectable silicone which is not for use in breast augmentation. Infection is also the most common issue regarding implantation surgery.

The cancer of the immune system associated with the implants is more likely if the texture of the shell is not smooth. The cancer itself develops in the lymphomas and not the breast tissue. The breast implant illness or BII consists of different symptoms experienced by those who have undergone implantation surgery. The symptoms themselves are wide-ranging and include fatigue, rashes, pain in the joints, and even memory loss.

What is true is that any health issues experienced after implantation surgery should be reported to your doctor. This will help to identify the cause of the symptoms and the proper treatment will be prescribed.

Keep in mind that some symptoms may or may not be directly related. In fact, some may not be symptoms that are caused by the implants, but rather something else which is coincidental.
